Check before you buy water tanks
- On an exposed Kerala roof, choose at least 3 layers. The black middle layer blocks sunlight and the outer layer resists UV. Go to 4-layer or PUF-insulated if you want noticeably cooler water.
- Check for the ISI mark (IS 12701) and '100% virgin' material. Tanks made from recycled plastic can taint water and age faster in the sun.
- A threaded or locking lid matters in the monsoon because it keeps mosquitoes and debris out.
- On sloped or trussed roofs, a low-level (Easy Clean) or loft tank is easier to install and far easier to clean than a tall overhead tank.
- Mount the tank on a flat, fully supported base. A full 1000 L tank weighs about a tonne.
How many layers does my water tank need?
For a rooftop tank in full Kerala sun, 3 layers is a sensible minimum. 4-layer or insulated tanks keep water cooler, and 2-layer tanks suit shaded or indoor spots.
What size tank should I buy?
Plan around your family's daily use plus a buffer for power cuts and pump failures. Tell us your household size and water source and we will suggest a capacity.
Do copper or anti-microbial tanks make a difference?
They add an inner layer designed to limit microbial growth inside the tank. Astral says the copper particles in Cleo and Vito neutralise 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, fungi and algae. You should still clean the tank periodically.
