Check before you buy showers
- Size the shower head to your pressure. A big 250–300 mm rain head needs good flow. In an overhead-tank home, especially on the top floor, a smaller head, a multi-function hand shower or a pressure pump will feel far better.
- If you have a geyser, a thermostatic mixer or diverter keeps the temperature steady even when someone opens another tap. It's well worth it for children and elders.
- Look for silicone anti-limescale nozzles (e.g. Jaquar's Rubit). Rub them with your thumb and deposits come off. That's useful if your water leaves white or rust-coloured marks.
- Plan concealed diverters before tiling, and ask for the right number of outlets (overhead, hand shower, spout). Upgrading later means breaking tiles.
- Check the warranty on shower heads and hand showers separately from the mixer. Brands often cover them differently, and hoses are usually excluded.
Why does my rain shower only trickle?
Usually because the pressure is too low for a large head. In a gravity-fed home, pressure comes only from the tank's height above the shower. A smaller or pressure-optimised head, a booster pump, or raising the tank can fix it. Also clean the nozzles in case of mineral build-up.
Is a thermostatic diverter worth the extra cost?
If you use a geyser or solar water heater, yes. It holds your chosen temperature and prevents sudden scalding when water is drawn elsewhere in the house, and it saves water you'd otherwise waste adjusting the mix.
Exposed or concealed shower mixer?
Concealed mixers look cleaner and are easier to wipe, but must be planned before tiling. Exposed mixers are ideal for renovations because they fit onto existing wall points with no chasing.
