Check before you buy basins & faucets
  • Check your pressure first. In a gravity-fed home with an overhead tank, pressure depends on the tank's height above the tap: roughly 0.1 bar per metre of drop. Upper-floor bathrooms often get very little, so choose mixers rated for low pressure or ask about a pressure pump.
  • On well water or water with iron or hardness, pick a faucet with a removable aerator you can descale, and wipe the finish dry. Chrome and PVD finishes stay good-looking far longer with a quick wipe than when mineral spots are left to bake on.
  • Match spout height to the basin. A tall-body mixer suits table-top basins, while a standard mixer on a vessel basin will splash and look wrong. Measure the basin's rim height before you pick the tap.
  • Concealed and wall-mounted mixers need their body fixed in the wall before tiling. Decide at the plumbing stage, not after the tiles are up.
  • Compare warranties for your use. Many premium brands give about 10 years on faucets for home use (CERA quotes 15 on CP faucets), usually covering the body and chrome but not rubber washers or aerators.
Chrome or matte black / gold PVD. Which lasts better?
Good chrome plating is the most forgiving everyday finish. PVD (physical vapour deposition) finishes like gold and gunmetal are very hard-wearing too. Matte black shows water spots more readily. Whatever you pick, clean with a soft cloth and mild soap, never abrasive powders or acid cleaners.
Why is the flow from my new mixer weak on the first floor?
Usually because of low pressure from the overhead tank, not a faulty tap. There may simply not be enough height between the tank and the tap. A clogged aerator can also cut the flow. We can check your setup and suggest a low-pressure-friendly mixer or a pressure pump.
Table-top or wall-hung basin: which is easier to maintain?
A wall-hung basin leaves the floor open for mopping. A table-top basin on a vanity gives you storage and a ledge, but needs the counter wiped around its base. For compact Kerala bathrooms, a wall-hung basin or a slim vanity usually works best.
