Check before you buy PVC pipes
- Match the pressure class to the pump. Every 10 m of pump head is about 1 kg/cm², so choose a class comfortably above your pump's shut-off pressure, not just its running pressure.
- For bathroom and kitchen cold lines, buy lead-free uPVC (ASTM SCH 40/80) and not agricultural pipe, which is built for field mains rather than drinking water.
- For a borewell you need two different pipes: casing pipe (IS 12818) lines the bore, and column pipe carries the submersible. Choose a heavier column grade for deeper pump settings.
- Keep drainage on SWR pipe with its own fittings and slopes. Pressure pipe and plumbing fittings are not designed for gravity drainage.
- Many Kottayam homes rely on open wells. A rainwater recharge line from the roof into the well, like Kelachandra's recharge systems, helps keep summer water levels up.
What do 4 kg and 6 kg mean on PVC pipes?
They are the IS 4985 working-pressure classes in kg/cm². A 6 kg pipe is rated for about 60 m of water head. Higher classes have thicker walls and suit pump delivery lines and long mains.
Can I use PVC pipe for hot water?
No. uPVC is for cold water, and Astral rates its Aquarius uPVC to 60°C maximum. Use CPVC for geyser and solar-heater lines.
What is the difference between casing pipe and column pipe?
Casing pipe lines the borewell and holds the bore open. Column pipe is the pipe the submersible pump hangs from, and it carries water up to the surface.
