Check before you buy water purifiers
- Test your TDS before buying. RO is needed when TDS is high (the BIS IS 10500 acceptable limit is 500 mg/L). For low-TDS well or rainwater, UV+UF keeps natural minerals and wastes no water.
- Well water in laterite areas of central Kerala is often acidic, and studies report iron leaching into it. Orange stains or a metallic taste point to iron, which needs an iron-removal pre-filter; a countertop purifier alone won't fix it. Get the water tested first.
- RO rejects part of the water it treats. Compare recovery rates (V-Guard quotes 25–30% on Zenora and up to 40% on Zenora 2X) and send the reject water to the garden or for cleaning.
- Choose a purifier certified to BIS IS 16240 with local service. Filters need regular replacement, and V-Guard, a Kerala company, has service across the state.
Do I need RO or is UV enough?
It depends on TDS. If your water is below about 500 mg/L and clear, UV or UV+UF is usually enough and keeps minerals. Hard borewell water with high TDS needs RO.
Does RO remove useful minerals?
RO removes most dissolved salts, including minerals, which is why many models add a mineraliser or alkaline stage afterwards, such as V-Guard's calcite mineral balancer.
My well water leaves brown stains. Will a purifier fix it?
Brown or orange staining usually means iron. Treat it with a dedicated iron-removal filter at the inlet, then a purifier for drinking water. We can help you arrange a water test.
