Check before you buy CPVC pipes
- Run CPVC on every line downstream of a geyser or rooftop solar heater. uPVC is a cold-water pipe (Astral rates Aquarius uPVC to 60°C max), so it should never carry hot water.
- Pick SDR 11 for hot lines and anywhere a pressure pump or booster feeds the system. SDR 13.5 carries roughly 20% less pressure at the same temperature.
- CTS and IPS sizes are different outside diameters and their fittings are not interchangeable. Stay with one system, and one brand's fittings, throughout.
- Use CPVC-rated solvent cement, not uPVC cement, and let joints cure for the manufacturer's stated time before pressure testing.
What is the difference between CPVC and uPVC pipes?
CPVC is chlorinated PVC and is rated for hot water up to 93°C. uPVC is for cold water only, with Astral rating its Aquarius uPVC to a 60°C maximum. Most homes use CPVC for hot and mixed lines and uPVC or CPVC for cold.
Should I choose SDR 11 or SDR 13.5?
SDR 11 has the thicker wall and higher pressure rating and is the safe default for hot lines and pump-fed systems. SDR 13.5 is lighter and works for lower-pressure lines. Ask us and we will match the class to your pump and heater.
Is CPVC safe for drinking water?
Yes. The brands we stock make CPVC for potable water, and Supreme's Lifeline CPVC, for example, carries NSF (USA) and CFTRI approvals. Buy branded ISI-marked pipe rather than unbranded stock.
