Check before you buy water pumps
- Open well (the most common source around Kottayam): if the summer water level stays within about 6 m of the pump, a self-priming or monoblock surface pump works. If it drops further, an openwell submersible avoids priming trouble altogether.
- Borewell: the pump must fit the bore diameter (3", 4" and so on) and be sized for total head, which is the depth to water plus the lift to the tank plus pipe losses. Bring your borewell depth and yield report when you come to buy.
- Weak pressure in upstairs showers is a booster job, not a bigger lifting pump. Choose one with automatic start/stop and dry-run protection.
- Rural voltage swings burn out motors. Look for wide-voltage designs and thermal overload protection, which CRI and Crompton both advertise, and add a proper starter or control panel for submersibles.
Which pump is best for an open well?
If the water stays within about 6 m of the pump, a self-priming or monoblock surface pump is simple and economical. For deeper or fluctuating wells, an openwell submersible sits in the water and needs no suction pipe or priming.
How do I choose a borewell pump?
Match the pump to the bore size and to the total head: the depth to water plus the lift to your tank. Share your borewell depth and yield with us and we will size it.
Do I need a pressure booster pump?
If showers and upper-floor taps run weak even with a full overhead tank, yes. A booster like the Grundfos SCALA2 holds steady pressure automatically.
