Check before you buy waste disposers
- Choose by household size: 0.5 HP is fine for 2–3 people with light cooking. A 0.75 HP model copes better with larger families and daily Kerala cooking waste.
- Always run cold water while grinding and for a few seconds after, so the ground waste flushes fully down the line.
- Keep out very fibrous or hard items, such as coconut shells and husk, large bones, and plenty of oil or grease, even with a powerful unit.
- Many Kerala homes are on septic tanks. Disposer makers say their units can drain to a septic system, but ground food adds solids, so make sure the tank is well sized and emptied on schedule.
- Plan a switched power point inside the sink cabinet and a sink with a standard 3½-inch waste outlet before you install.
Is a waste disposer safe with a septic tank?
Manufacturers such as Franke say disposers can flush ground waste into sewage or septic systems. With a septic tank, it adds solids, so a well-sized tank and regular emptying are important. Ask us about your setup before you buy.
What size disposer do I need?
For most homes, 0.5 HP handles everyday scraps for a small family. Pick 0.75 HP for larger households or heavy daily cooking. It grinds faster and jams less.
Can I fit a disposer to my existing sink?
Usually yes, if the sink has a standard 3½-inch (about 90 mm) waste opening and there's room and a power point in the cabinet below. Smaller outlets need a sink change.
